PENNINE CYCLEWAY 2009
Peter & Tracey Luff
Peter & Tracey Luff will be attempting to cycle the 355 miles of the Pennine Cycleway which runs from Derby to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Starting on Sunday June 14th & taking 7 days to complete, camping en route.
WHAT A WEEK! Without question both physically & mentally the toughest thing Tracey or myself have ever undertaken!
Looking back at the ride now we are home, we wouldn't have missed it for the world, but there were times during the week we questioned what we were doing.
Low Points
- Discovering the terrain & hills are more extreme than anticipated & we were carrying far to much weight.
- Frequently being misdirected (By Mistake?) It took us nearly 2 hours to get out of Derby City Centre due to being sent around in circles. The signs for our route over the week ranged from excellent - poor - non existent!
- Being chased by a dog. (I thought that sort of thing only happened on TV).
High Points
- Not having a single puncture during the week.
- Traveling through some of the most beautiful countryside on offer in the UK & meeting some wonderful people including Carolyn & Joe Ormston, who while we were passing their farm took us in for tea & a chat. www.northsharperton.co.uk
- Cycling to the top of Hartside to the highest cafe in England at 1,903 feet.
- Crossing Union bridge into Scotland, & the feeling of personal achievement cycling into Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Quote of the week
After asking a local in Buxton for directions & being told to turn left into Long Hill. I asked "Long Hill, that will be Long Hill DOWN will it?" To which he replied poker faced. "NOTHINGS down hill around here Mate!"
Over the 7 days of our ride we covered a total of 386.5 miles & have raised around £800 for charity. Thank-you to EVERY-ONE who sponsored us.
